What do you eat on a meat, egg and cheese diet?
Just what the name says. Eggs, meat and cheese are the meals, most days for him and nearly the whole menu on his Reset.
A listener named Mary asked what a typical day of eating looks like for him. He answered:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 629Eggs, meat, and cheese. If there's anyone that eats more meat than me, I'd like to meet them. I'd like to meet them. Steak, roast beef, hamburger, and the odd day, some chicken, chicken and salad. Not often.
His day starts with bacon, eggs and sausages. Asked if he ever gets tired of it, he said no. He has had coffee every day since he was 15, and he does not get tired of that either.
Wondering about the eggs? Read how many eggs a day are fine after 60. For the meat, see whether chicken is healthier than beef.
Why eggs, meat and cheese, and not vegetables?
Nutrition. That is the biggest reason he gives for building the Reset around these three foods.
Why does the Reset leave out vegetables and fruit? He has explained it many times:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 627So am I against vegetables and fruits? Of course I'm not, okay. But there's a reason behind these choices but the biggest reason is nutrition. It's nutrition science.
On the three macros in food, protein, fat and carbohydrate, he said:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 629God wants you to eat eggs, meat, and cheese. Why is that? Because then you're going to get protein and fat, and see the third one? No carbs, a little bit, but not much.
Protein is king of the castle for him, and he means protein with its fat, the way it comes in nature.
What is a nutrivore?
It is the word he uses for himself. A nutrivore picks food for the nutrients in it.
After saying he is not a carnivore, he went on:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 627You know what I think I am? I'm a nutrivore. What do I mean by that? Well, I am big time into nutrients.
By nutrients he means vitamins, minerals, amino acids and the best proteins and fats. He wants the foods that carry the most of them.
That is why he picks bacon over avocado. Avocados are good, he says, but fish or steak gives you 300 times more omega-3.
Most practitioners, he says, would call the avocado the better choice. His conclusion:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 627You're better off with a piece of bacon than an avocado. You're just better off, nutrition wise, fat wise, oleic acid wise.
Nitrates in bacon? Vegetables have them too, he says. Watch the whole episode below.
Is a meat, cheese and eggs diet the same as carnivore?
No. A carnivore lives on meat. He leans that way, but he eats plenty of eggs and cheese too.
A member of his private Facebook group asked him straight out if he was a carnivore. He said:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 627No, I'm not. Carnivore meaning you live on meat, right? And no, I'm not. I certainly would lean that way, but I'm not a carnivore.
He does have some carbs. His wife is Italian, so spaghetti is on the table, but he lives on the meat and sausage in the sauce, not the noodles. For how this compares with keto, read why he puts protein first on keto after 60.
How long do you stay on it?
The strict version, his Reset, lasts 30 days. After that, he does not ask you to stay that strict.
On how strict those 30 days are:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 629Go on another planet for the reset because you're going to just about have to, because you can't have any carbohydrates. But that's for 30 days and some people they're eating like that all the time.
He calls the Reset a lifestyle change, and he says that is what he is aiming for.
"It takes 21 days to form a habit. I want you to form a habit. I want you to become a nutrivore, like me."
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 627Is eating this much meat and cheese bad for you?
Not in his view. He says sugar and junk carbohydrates inflame the body, and red meat does not.
A listener had heard that red meat is inflammatory. He disagreed:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 629So when you want anti-inflammatory foods, one of them would be red meat, eggs, cheese. These are anti-inflammatory foods. Why? Because they lower your insulin response.
Sugar and junk carbs push insulin up, he says, and over time that drives inflammation. More in what causes inflammation over 60.
Buy organic meat if you can afford it, he says, but ordinary vegetables carry sprays too. Worried about iron? Read whether steak can give you too much iron.
He does not cover cholesterol in these episodes. See normal cholesterol for a woman over 60.
Is it a good way to eat for a woman over 60?
He thinks so. When he talks to women about hormones and bones, this is the food he points to.
Talking to women about their hormones, he said:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 629Eat like a nutrivore. Get your nutrition right because every organ in your body, including your thyroid, including your ovaries, including your adrenals, including your brain, where it all comes from, headquarters, need good nutrition, complete nutrition.
Asked about osteoporosis, he said calcium should come from food, not a pill:
Dr. Martin, from The Doctor Is In, episode 629Calcium is meant to be eaten and you get lots of it if you eat eggs, meat and cheese. There's a lot of calcium there.
Cheese and butter add vitamin K2, which he says moves calcium into your bones. His shorthand is sun, steak and steel: sunshine, red meat and weights or bands.
"Ladies, get muscled up," he says, and he wants 15 to 20 minutes of it. More in osteoporosis in women over 60.
On medication, or a diet your doctor set? Ask your doctor before you start the Reset.
Common questions
What can you drink on a meat, eggs and cheese diet?
Water and coffee. Those are the two drinks he wants on the Reset. He says no juice, and he would pass on almond milk and grocery store milk. His dairy rule is don't ditch it, switch it. Episode 629.
Can you eat vegetables on a meat, cheese and egg diet?
Not during the 30 days of the Reset. He says he is not against vegetables or fruit, and outside the Reset he has the odd salad, though he calls salad overrated. Episodes 627 and 629.
