TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE

Announcer:  You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr. Martin:  Well, good morning, everyone. And once again, welcome to another live this morning.

And I hope you can tell that I'm on the road. Not in my little studio this morning. Okay,

I'm going to read you a quote here because we're going to go back to what we started yesterday.

Okay, let me read you this quote. This comes from Dr. Kraft. Okay, not Kraft dinner. He didn't

invent Kraft dinner. Dr. Kraft, I remember studying him and I'm not kidding you in the 1980s.

He'd been around a long time and was known as the father of diabetes research. Okay, Dr. Kraft.

And he said this, I really liked this. And he said it a long time ago, he's been dead now.

I'm going to say five years, maybe a little bit more than that. Here's his quote, no such thing

as pre diabetic. You are either on the road to diabetes or you are not. And that's his guys.

I learned a lot from Dr. Kraft. I really did. He was talking about insulin and insulin resistance

before anyone else. And he understood the danger of insulin resistance. Okay,

so I had to read you that quote because we're going to go back into a little bit this morning

of indicators that you're on the broad road. And the guys when I say you guys, you know what I mean

by that. I'm talking about the world out there. You guys are smart. You guys know that the importance

of insulin resistance and don't fool yourself. Okay, now blood tests, you can do a fasting insulin.

It'll give you a great indicator. But you know you have metabolic syndrome, which is caused by

insulin resistance. If your triglycerides are high, your HDL is low, you have even slightly

elevated A1c. That's the test that I love probably as much as any other test. I love the A1c because

for years I've been looking at that, studying it and anybody that studied the A1c test, which is an

average of your blood sugar. Okay, an average of your blood sugar over two, three, four months,

you get that test. It will tell you if you're anything above 5.4, that's the sweet spot. You want

to be 5.4 or lower on your A1c. If you're above 5.4 on your A1c, you're on the boat. You're on the

Titanic. You're on the broad road. That leads to destruction. So isn't that wonderful that we can

know? We can know. It's not a guess. And if you have trouble with A1c, the nice thing is, okay?

And I used to do this with thousands and thousands of patients over the years. I said, listen,

doc, how come my A1c is higher? You know, I'm not a bad eater. I said, here's the point.

It's who you are. And you have insulin resistance at the cellular level. Your cells are sick and tired

of carbohydrates. You and carbs don't get along. If you know that, guys, this is me. Look at me.

Okay? Remember, genetically, I have diabetes coming out my both ears in my family. I knew that

when I was in high school. I got the memo. I looked like my dad. I talked like my dad.

And my dad was diabetic. Okay? The older I get, my wife often tells me, I married my father-in-law.

They didn't call me Tony Jr. for nothing. But guys, all I'm saying is this, okay? When I get my A1c

tested, I'm always right on the edge there. I have to discipline myself big time because

me, okay? This is me. Me and carbs, we don't get along. I love them. I love carbs. Man, you know,

when the Bible says man shall not live by bread alone, I could live on bread. I mean it. I love bread.

But it don't love me. You know what I'm saying by that, guys? That's me. And that's most of the world

because 93% of the population, guys, have exactly that issue. And so you can do what I used to call

in my office, the poor man's test. What did I mean by that? Well, you can test. You don't have to guess.

You can test. And so get your A1c and look at it. Don't wait for your doctor because they're waiting

for diabetes. They're waiting to give you the name diabetes. No. Are you on the broad road?

You got to say, okay, that's me. And like I said, in North America, it's 93% of the population. It

went from 88 in 2016 to 93% in 2020. It didn't take long. And it's probably above that. It's just

because we're not used to talking reality. Dr. Kraft, I'm glad I studied under him. And it wasn't

only him because again, I had my own family experience. You know, I was taught moderation.

When I had to take, guys, listen, I took over 2000 hours of nutrition. Okay. You take the bad

with the good. Okay. Because in order to get your degree, you have to take courses. And these people

were saying moderation, moderation, moderation. I understood that that was never true. So I never

talked about that. But I had to pass. You know, my dad used to tell me, shut up and get your degree.

Because I used to complain, you know, I complained about it. I said, dad, they don't know what they're

talking about. He said, shut up and get your degree. So guys, look, here it is again. A1c,

anything 5.4 above. Two, if you got slightly elevated blood pressure, that's a factor in

metabolic syndrome. 93% of the population. Guys, heart disease. We haven't even made a dent.

It makes me sad. We haven't even made a dent in heart disease. And because we're looking for love

in all the wrong places, because they don't even look at it. They just want to treat it rather than

look at it. Okay. So anyway, A1c, the key. Triglycerides. If they're up and your HDL is down,

it's like a teeter-totter, you're in trouble. Look at your triglycerides. Look at your HDL.

HDL should be at least even, but even better if it's higher than your triglycerides.

Okay. Triglycerides, fat ball. Other things are really important to look at too. Very important to

look at. And you know, you got any kind of belly fat. See, even skinny people can have visceral fat.

And that's why even skinny people, you check their A1c. I used to tell over the years,

I don't know how many thousands of people that were skinny as a rate. And I said, well, that

don't make you healthy. I said, look at your biomarkers. They're out of whack. I said, you have

visceral fat. You have fat around your organs. You can't see it, but it's there. And it's dangerous.

It's dangerous. Okay. So get your uric acid levels checked. Because uric acid, elevated

uric acid levels is metabolic syndrome. Now nobody else says it. I say it. Okay. Nobody else says it.

I'll tell you. I say it. My experience, I would check uric acid levels and it was very consistent

with people that had an elevated A1c. It was consistent. Sure, there was exception, but not many.

So I added it to the list. I added vitamin D to the list. The actual low levels of vitamin D would

tell you that you're on the Titanic. Low levels of B12 because B12 is a metabolic vitamin.

So is vitamin D. They're metabolic vitamin. If they're low, you got to take that and put it

in your crawl because it's really important. Okay. So yesterday we just talked about, let me just

finish the list of things that can be very much related guys to metabolic syndrome. Okay. Kind

of surprising. You know, like what's that got to do with your metabolic syndrome? Well, it has a lot

to do with it. Again, I was telling you about the chart I used to have in my office. And that chart,

guys, it used to shock patients. Okay. And I had a big, big wall chart with symptoms of metabolic

syndrome. I said possible symptoms and signs of metabolic syndrome. Vertigo tinnitus. We talked

about this yesterday. Joint pain. What? Pain. Joint pain. Okay. Now look, if you hurt your knee,

you fell and you scraped your knee. I'm not talking about that, but just a chronic type of pain. It

was amazing what happened when you cleaned up their diet. Skin tags. Okay. You got skin tags?

That's insulin resistance. Carpal tunnel. We talked about that yesterday. I got some feedback

yesterday. People going, you're talking carpal tunnel. I had surgery on that. Well, look, I'm

just telling you, I saw that so many times. Carpal tunnel. It was amazing when you cleaned up the

diet. What could happen? Gout, obviously, we talked about that. Okay. Goat. People that get

gout have metabolic syndrome, almost without exception. Okay. They talk pureens. I talked

insulin. They talk meat. Don't eat the meat, especially red meat for gout. I said, well,

no, it's sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup. There's nothing that will elevate uric acid more

than fructose does. Okay. You can eat fruit, but don't drink it. And because gout has gone up 300%

since the 1980s, gout has been around forever. It's up 300%. That's a fact. And young people

getting gout. It's amazing. A lot of people have joint pain and they don't realize they have chronic

gout. Uric acid, kidney stones, kidney stones. There's two reasons for kidney stones, guys.

Two reasons. One, you're eating too many vegetables, too much spinach, and you have oxalates.

That's number one. Number two is your kidney stones are uric acid stones. They're not oxalates,

they're uric acid stones. And guess what? Fructose, insulin. Yes, nothing affects the kidneys more

than sugar, not salt, sugar. And how many people were able to come off their high blood pressure

medication because they cut out the sugar in their diet? It was amazing because the kidneys hold on to

salt when you consume too much sugar. So listen, kidney stones and people suffer with those things.

It's like having a baby, but you don't get a baby at the end. Kidney stones, terrible. Are they

uric acid or are they oxalate? Okay. I used to tell people, you're not a rabbit. You're eating too

many vegetables. What? Your kidney stones are oxalates. They're little crystals. So they're

either uric acid or they're oxalates, kidney stones. Okay. Psoriasis. How many got psoriasis?

I know. If you have psoriasis, number one, okay, let me just say this because it's really important.

Someone that has psoriasis or eczema or eczema or whatever you want to call it all,

if you have eczema or psoriasis, you have leaky gut. That is 100%. You have a fungal,

a yeast infection, but let me give you another but to it. Oftentimes associated with the psoriasis

insulin resistance to much sugar feeding the bears. Don't feed the bears. Okay. Here's one

brought to you by The Doctor Is In podcast. Listen to this one. Sleep apnea. Guys, true story.

I never heard of sleep apnea when I was in school in the days of Noah. When I went to school,

there was no sleep apnea. There was no machines. I'm sure a few people had it, but I never even

studied it, but I'll tell you what it is guys. It is fatty tongue. You heard it here first

on The Doctor Is In podcast. You heard it here. I used to tell people I had it up in my clinic.

If you have sleep apnea, you got trouble with insulin resistance. 100% true. What? I'm telling

you, you got fatty tongue. Okay. You might not be fat anywhere else, but you got fatty tongue.

Insulin guys is a growth hormone. Well, think of skin takes. Okay. Think of skin takes.

What are they? Insulin making those tags grow. It's food. Sleep apnea. It's food. You know,

and people, they're never told that. They're just told to wear a machine. If you don't wear your

machine, we're taking away your driver's license. You stop sleeping 40 times every hour,

whatever it was, you know, anybody that's ever gone to a sleep clinic, you find out, holy smokes.

I stopped breathing how many times in an hour and they measure it, but they don't talk to you about

insulin. Never do. As far as I know, they might tell you to lose weight, which is interesting,

right? Cause I've heard that said people, patients of mine that have gone for sleep testing, they've

been told to lose weight. How do you lose weight on your tongue? If anybody should have a fatty tongue,

it's me. Why? I never stopped talking. That's what my wife says. No, you see, I exercise it.

That's why I don't gain weight on my tongue. Right? Anyway, we can do a whole thing about tongue.

Okay. And Cecilia, I just saw that Cecilia said your travel insurance goes up if you have sleep

apnea. I didn't know that. I learned something today. Thank you, Cecilia. If you have sleep apnea,

I guess your insurance rates go up for travel. I didn't know that. Okay. High blood pressure,

we talked about that. Biggest factor in high blood pressure is insulin resistant. Here's another

one. Men, here's another one. Men, ED, erectile dysfunction. It's circulation. Yeah, it's circulation.

Why do you have trouble with circulation? Sugar. It's sugar. Yeah, ED. It's a sign that you have

insulin resistance and isn't it amazing when I used to take my patients blood work and I said,

well, look at your A1C. What are your symptoms? You must have some symptoms. And then I'd say,

look back at my chart there. What do you got? Okay. And men, it was embarrassing for them sometimes.

I said, I'm a man. Don't worry about it. Tell me the truth. Yeah, Doc, I got ED. And it ain't no fun.

Yeah. I said, well, can I tell you why you have it? Okay. And then I said, you're going to go home

and we got a plan. We're going to do this and we're going to change your food, erectile dysfunction.

And then I'm going to finish with this. The last one. Horamones, ladies. Horamones. When you

understand the connection and you guys visualize it. Oh, maybe I have a picture of it. Depends

what notepad I have with me. I always got my yellow notepad. Okay. I don't leave home without it.

Because I'm always writing stuff. But anyway, it seems like this is a new one. I didn't even do it.

Okay. In your mind, do the pyramid. Okay. Do this pyramid in your mind. Thyroid.

At the bottom, ladies, ovaries, men, right in the middle, testes. Okay. Your ovaries, ladies.

Essergen progesterone. Go halfway up. You got your adrenals on the side of the pyramid. Okay.

Think of the drawing. You got your adrenals. Your cortisol on the top. You have your thyroid

in the middle, right in the middle of the pyramid, right here is your pancreas, your insulin.

They're all connected. They're connected. And when your hormones are off, you got too much estrogen,

not enough progesterone. Your thyroid is slow to a crawl. Let me tell you something.

Those hormones, and I never, ever, ever sent a patient home after we had diagnosed that they had

a sluggish thyroid, too much estrogen, not enough progesterone. The cortisol was out of whack.

They looked at food sideways and gaining weight. Their metabolism was into a coma. You know what we did?

We sent them home with a plan and part of the plan was food. I said, your insulin has a major effect

on your hormones. Food cut down on the carbs. Cut out your sugar. You gotta love eggs, meat, and cheese.

Your body would design for it. Watch how much better your hormones get when you eat properly.

It's not everything, but it's the main thing. Dr. Kraft was right. The whole world went crazy waiting

till someone was diagnosed with diabetes. And Dr. Kraft, I learned from him, don't you wait. If you're

on the Titanic, that's my words, not his, because I love the illustration of a Titanic. People were

on the Titanic. They had no idea they were in trouble. The unsinkable ship. A lot of people go

through life and they think, ah, no problem. Yeah, there's a big problem. Okay, guys, we love you dearly

and sincerely. Okay, tomorrow is what? Q&A. Send your questions in info at martinclinic.com.

Guys, sorry about my little studio this morning. Hey, it's the best I could do. I'm in my truck.

Okay, love you guys. Talk to you soon.
