The thyroid never acts on its own

Dr. Martin on why the thyroid is a puppet:

The thyroid never acts on its own. It's a puppet. It's got strings attached to it. The strings is often, in women especially, estrogen dominance. They have too much estrogen. When you have too much estrogen, you're not converting T4 to T3. If you have leaky gut, you don't convert T4 to T3 properly. T3 is the hormone that your thyroid needs. I mean, it needs the other ones. T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, calcitonin but T3 is the one that makes your thyroid work properly and there's a lot of factors to that. If you have fatty liver, that's why a diet is so important even for thyroid.

My dad taught me this

Dr. Martin on symptoms and blood tests:

My dad taught me this. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck, meaning thyroid. If you got all the symptoms of a sluggish thyroid, your thyroid's out of whack. I don't care what your TSH says. That's what I mean by symptoms trump blood tests, it's like B12. The test is a hundred years old. Give it a birthday party and put it to bed. What's normal? What does that mean? How do you feel? That's what's important.

If you understand the thyroid

Dr. Martin on looking at the whole picture:

I find if you understand the thyroid and you understand that the thyroid does not act independently, only doing thyroid tests is a mistake that medicine makes. You got to look at the whole picture. You have to look at cortisol, you have to look at estrogen and progesterone, even insulin. And you have to look at liver because 80% of the conversion your body needs, your thyroid doesn't work without T3. It doesn't work without T3. The conversion of T4 to T3, most of the thyroid makes is T4. And then there's a finicky process of converting that to T3. Very finicky and relies on a lot of different things. That's why the thyroid is so difficult and medicine when they forget that all they can do. They're hijacked by the labs. All they can think of is tests, ranges between normal and abnormal are a hundred miles apart. Oh, your thyroid's normal. It's not really normal if it's not working properly.

"I don't care what your TSH says."

Dr. Martin, The Doctor Is In, Episode 1688

TSH doesn't come out of your thyroid

Dr. Martin on TSH and T3:

So again, TSH doesn't come out of your thyroid. It comes out of your brain. The pituitary, the pituitary releases, thyroid stimulating hormone tells the thyroid gland to secrete. Look, you got T1, T2, T3, T4, but just for the sake of understanding the thyroid, it makes T3. This is the key and reverse T3, don't get in the weeds. Your thyroid will not work without T3, okay? Your thyroid won't work properly without the conversion of T3. You only make about a teaspoon in the whole year. You see how finicky that thyroid can be? If this doesn't compute, if it doesn't make T3 properly, your thyroid's going to be sluggish. It'll slow down. Understand that.

The number one side effect of thyroid medication

Dr. Martin on thyroid medication:

Do you know what the number one side effect of thyroid medication? Extreme fatigue, extreme fatigue. That's the number one side effect of it. Well, holy moly. I thought you were taking the med? Thyroid is your gas pedal. Thyroid is your metabolism. That's why I'm taking the med. Yeah. Side effect, extreme fatigue. Now I don't know if there's been anything misdiagnosed or mistreated like the thyroid gland. It's not the cause, it's a victim. And we've often explained whenever thyroid is involved, whenever, it's rarely and I mean 99% of the time it's never the thyroid alone.

They were created after the TSH test

Dr. Martin on what the medication fixes:

Now, remember, they were created after the TSH test. You know what they do? They actually fix your TSH, but they don't fix the problem. They don't fix the problem, they fix TSH.

Dr. Martin, The Doctor Is In, Episode 605

Your thyroid can't work without iodine

Dr. Martin on iodine and selenium:

Your thyroid can't work without iodine, but I like selenium because your thyroid can't work without selenium either. That's why I'm a big believer in eating steak.
